Dr. Ammar Al Jafari, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH), has announced that the radiology department of the hospital has achieved accreditation from the West African College of Surgeons to offer residency training for the first time in the hospital’s history. This accreditation marks a significant milestone for EFSTH and the nation as a whole.
The journey towards obtaining accreditation for the radiology department began a decade ago, but was hindered by the lack of essential equipment necessary to meet the accreditation standards. Dr. Jafari expressed his excitement about the accreditation, stating that previously, the equipment such as CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, mammography, and X-ray machines were not functional, making it impossible to obtain accreditation. However, now all of the equipment is fully operational, and the department is ready to start offering training programs for resident doctors.
The CMD noted that this achievement is a major milestone for the hospital and emphasized the importance of having all the necessary equipment to receive accreditation. A team from the West African College of Surgeons recently visited EFSTH to inspect the various imaging units, staff rooms, and other facilities within the radiology department. Dr. Jafari proudly shared that he is the first CMD to have the radiology department accredited by the West African College of Surgeons, enabling them to train resident doctors in The Gambia.
He expressed his delight and pride in this achievement, highlighting the hard work and dedication that went into ensuring that all equipment was up to standard. Without the proper equipment, the college would not have granted accreditation, making this accomplishment even more significant. Dr. Jafari emphasized the importance of having a fully equipped department to provide quality training programs for resident doctors.
In conclusion, the accreditation of the radiology department at EFSTH by the West African College of Surgeons is a momentous achievement for the hospital and the nation. Dr. Jafari’s dedication to ensuring that all necessary equipment was in place has resulted in this recognition, allowing them to offer residency training for the first time. This accomplishment showcases the commitment of EFSTH to providing quality healthcare services and training opportunities for medical professionals in The Gambia.
