This marked the beginning of a transformative journey towards enhancing Lumos as pivotal market centers in the country that facilitate cross-border trade and integration among border communities.
During the foundation stone ceremony, Honourable Minister Aboubacarr Ousmaila Joof highlighted the significance of Lumos in promoting domestic trade, emphasizing the need for their modernization as a key priority in the development of the country’s trade sector. It aligns with the Government of The Gambia’s commitment to promoting trade, regional integration, and market connectivity through the construction of modern infrastructures nationwide.
Furthermore, the Minister announced the Government’s commitment to supporting similar initiatives in all Lumo centers, prioritizing those located on main highways to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals and goods. The project will incorporate facilities that promote health, hygiene, food preservation, and security, addressing the longstanding challenges faced by local communities in accessing modern market facilities.
The Minister urged all stakeholders to maintain their momentum and ensure the timely completion of the construction project, emphasizing the importance of quality work that aligns with President Adama Barrow’s legacy. The Permanent Secretary of MOTIE, the NAM for Jarra East Constituency, Alkalo, Chief, and Ward Counsellor of Wellingaraba delivered impactful speeches at the foundation stone ceremony, underscoring the significance of the Lumo modernization project for the community.
