Just after completing the previous article on the role-playing by the Adama Barrow government as opposed to actual governing, a few developments shed light on the issue even further. One involved the renaming of the Ministry of Agriculture and the other was the announcement of an “investigation” into the death of a Gambian citizen in Germany. These events highlight the lack of seriousness in the current government and raise doubts about their ability to deliver meaningful results.

The Ministry of Agriculture was officially renamed as the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Security. This move exemplifies the superficiality of the current government. Instead of focusing on meaningful reforms and initiatives that could improve the lives of citizens, they chose to focus on a superficial name change that did not alter the ministry’s portfolio or objectives in any significant way. The primary goal of the agricultural sector has always been food security, and adding “food security” to the ministry’s name did not bring about any real changes or improvements in the sector.

While The Gambia faces serious challenges in the agricultural sector, such as low rice productivity, rising food prices, and lack of irrigation for vegetable farming, the government’s decision to focus on renaming ministries instead of addressing these pressing issues is disappointing. The lack of meaningful action in key areas reflects the government’s misplaced priorities and lack of focus on real governance.

Moreover, the government’s decision to split the Ministry of Information and Communication into two separate ministries, despite the unnecessary duplication of roles and expenses, further highlights their lack of strategic decision-making. This move only exacerbates the inefficiencies and disconnect within the government, leading to wastage of resources and duplication of efforts.

The announcement of an “investigation” into the death of a Gambian citizen in Germany further underscores the government’s inclination towards superficial gestures rather than addressing core issues. The idea of the government conducting an investigation in a foreign country is impractical and unrealistic, given the lack of resources and jurisdiction. Instead of focusing on essential law enforcement reforms and improving the domestic security sector, the government is engaging in distractions that do not serve the interests of the Gambian people.

In conclusion, the Adama Barrow government’s focus on appearances over real governance is evident in their actions regarding the ministries’ renaming and the announcement of a fake investigation. The government’s tendency to prioritize superficial gestures over substantial reforms reflects a lack of seriousness and purpose in their approach to governance. It is imperative for the government to shift their focus towards addressing the critical issues facing the country and delivering tangible results that benefit the Gambian people.
