Dear Editor,

In recent years, The Gambia has undertaken significant efforts to address past human rights abuses and promote reconciliation through various commissions, such as the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparation Commission (TRRC), the Janneh Commission, and the Constitution Review Commission (CRC). These commissions were established by President Adama Barrow at a considerable cost to the nation, totaling D348 million, with the aim of uncovering the truth, seeking justice, and charting a way forward for the country.

However, despite the significant investment and legal backing of these commissions, they have been undermined and sabotaged by President Barrow for personal gain. In the case of the TRRC, perpetrators of heinous crimes roam freely while victims continue to suffer. The Janneh Commission saw assets seized from the Jammeh era redistributed to the president’s own associates, with legal sanctions being disregarded. Additionally, the president’s actions regarding the CRC, where he prevented the adoption of a draft constitution due to term limits that would restrict his stay in power, resulted in the waste of D116 million allocated for the commission.

President Barrow’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the rule of law and a dedication to self-serving interests over the welfare of the Gambian people. The leadership crisis in the country is not rooted in political disagreements but in the president’s unethical conduct, corruption, and lack of commitment to upholding the law.

It is unlikely that President Barrow will change his ways, as shown by his track record since assuming office. His governance style has created an environment that emboldens criminals and undermines democratic principles. The president’s alliances with unsavory characters further illustrate his commitment to personal gain at the expense of national interests.

The resignation of Madi from the Westminster Foundation over the issue of Palestinian rights highlights the importance of standing up against injustice and human rights abuses. Madi’s decision to take a principled stand reflects his commitment to advocating for the oppressed and marginalized. Despite the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Madi’s stance underscores the need for individuals to prioritize humanity over political or religious affiliations.

While some may question Madi’s motivations or criticize his actions, it is essential to acknowledge the fundamental values of justice and compassion that guide his activism. In a world where conflicts and crises often overwhelm, individuals like Madi serve as beacons of moral integrity and resilience in the face of adversity.

In closing, it is imperative for leaders like President Barrow to prioritize the well-being of their citizens and uphold the rule of law, rather than pursuing personal gain at the expense of national interests. True leadership requires a commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical governance, qualities that seem to be lacking in the current administration.

Sincerely,

Karamba Touray
