The people of Niumis and Baddibus are currently facing challenges due to frequent breakdowns of ferries, especially during the holy month of Ramadan. The Banjul-Barra crossing point sees hundreds and thousands of commuters struggling to find alternative transportation when the ferries are not operational.
Instead of showing compassion and providing assistance to these passengers, boat operators between Banjul and Barra often take advantage of the situation by increasing fares for crossing. Commuters have reported paying exorbitant fees, sometimes up to two hundred dalasis, just to make the journey across the river. This cost does not even include additional charges for porters who assist passengers in boarding and disembarking from the boats, which can amount to an extra D50.
In total, an individual could end up paying as much as three hundred dalasis for a single crossing when the ferry is not operating, compared to the usual fare of D35 when the ferry is in service. This financial burden is especially heavy on Gambians who are already struggling to make ends meet in the face of rising commodity prices and stagnant earnings.
The issue of unreliable ferry services becomes even more critical during Ramadan, a month of heightened spiritual reflection and charity. The increased risk of using alternative transportation methods, such as boats, coupled with the significant cost difference, poses a significant challenge for many individuals.
It is crucial for the Government of The Gambia to address this issue and ensure a reliable and affordable sea travel arrangement between Banjul and Barra. By prioritizing the welfare of its citizens and providing a safe and efficient transportation system, the government can alleviate the burden on commuters and improve the overall travel experience for all individuals in the region.
In conclusion, the current challenges faced by commuters using the Banjul-Barra crossing point underscore the importance of a dependable and affordable sea travel system. By taking proactive measures to address the issues with ferry services, the government can ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens, particularly during a time of heightened spiritual significance like Ramadan.
