The Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (TANGO) recently conducted a training session for its members focusing on leadership and organizational management. The training, which was funded by FORUM CIV-Sweden, GG, TANGO, and Future in our Hands, took place at the TANGO Conference Hall.

During the training, the Executive Director of TANGO, Ndey Sireng Bakurin, highlighted the importance of equal rights through education, dialogue, and advocacy. This program is a collaboration between three organizations – Gambia Grupperna (GG) from Sweden, Future in Our Hands the Gambia (FIOHTG), and The Association of Non-Governmental Organizations in The Gambia (TANGO). The aim of the program is to strengthen the capacity of civil society in The Gambia, empowering the local population to bring about change through activism, in alignment with national development plans and sustainable development goals.

Bakurin emphasized the vital role that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) play in society. She highlighted the need for capacity development, focusing on institution building and resource development. Many challenges faced by NGOs and CSOs stem from a lack of understanding of effective management practices, which can be addressed through appropriate training.

The training aimed to enhance leadership and management skills to ensure sustainability within organizations. Bakurin stressed the importance of continuously working together to progress in organizational effectiveness. She emphasized the significance of improving management and operational efficiency in NGOs and CSOs, recognizing the importance of organizational competencies such as knowledge, skills, experience, and commitment.

Furthermore, Bakurin highlighted the changing landscape of development, which requires NGOs and civil society to adapt to complex systems, be flexible and innovative, and uphold multiple lines of management and accountability. The evolving nature of development necessitates a commitment to effectively managing financial and human resources, as well as outreach efforts.

In conclusion, the training session organized by TANGO aimed to equip members with the necessary skills and knowledge to enhance their leadership and organizational management capabilities. By strengthening the capacity of civil society in The Gambia, these organizations are better positioned to drive positive change and contribute to sustainable development goals. The collaboration between TANGO, GG, and FIOHTG reflects a shared commitment to empowering communities and promoting social progress.
