The legacy of great scholars is often preserved in the institutions they establish, reflecting their beliefs, wisdom, and dedication to serving humanity. One such revered figure was Sheikh Ahmad Drammeh from The Gambia, whom I had the privilege of knowing as a friend. His simplicity, service, and scholarship marked him as a remarkable sage of West Africa, exuding piety, love for Allah, and a deep commitment to humanity. Sheikh Ahmad Drammeh, also known as Alhaji Banding Drammeh, was a prominent figure in The Gambia, renowned for his weekly radio program “The Muslim World,” which he hosted since 1970. I had the opportunity to visit him in The Gambia after he visited my family in Nottingham, UK.
Sheikh Ahmad’s educational journey began at a local Islamic school in Brikama, where he diligently studied the Qur’an, tafsir, Arabic, and Islamic sciences. Even while working on the farm to support his family, Sheikh Ahmad would revise his lessons overnight. In 1964, he embarked on a journey to Egypt to study at the University of Al-Azhar, where he obtained a BA. After completing his studies and obtaining a higher diploma in Libya, he established an Arabic school in Brikama, Gambia, which has since produced numerous students serving in various sectors across the country.
Some of Sheikh Ahmad’s notable achievements include the establishment of the Islamic Institute in Brikama in 1975, which offers both Islamic and state curriculum education. The institute’s English section provides secondary and high school education, making it one of the most successful senior secondary schools in The Gambia. Sheikh Ahmad also published the monthly magazine “Voice of Islam” in Arabic and English, reflecting his commitment to educating and inspiring the masses.
As a natural leader and revivalist, Sheikh Ahmad sought to organize scholars and imams in The Gambia. He founded the Association of Gambian Islamic and Arabic Language Scholars with the support of Sheikh Alhaji Keba Landing Sanyang and others, later integrating the association with the Supreme Islamic Council. Sheikh Ahmad promoted unity within the Muslim community, encouraging diversity of opinions and moderation while ensuring representation of various groups in the council’s activities.
Sheikh Ahmad Drammeh’s legacy lives on through the generations of students he has nurtured and guided. His son, Khalid Drammeh, now carries the responsibility of continuing his father’s work. Let us remember and honor this remarkable man who dedicated his life to educating and developing the youth of The Gambia. Our sincere condolences go out to his family, and we pray for his soul to rest in peace.
In conclusion, Sheikh Ahmad Drammeh’s contributions to education, leadership, and community unity in The Gambia are a testament to his unwavering dedication to serving humanity and advancing knowledge. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations to strive for excellence and make a positive impact on society.
