In a recent interview with The Voice, Hon. Madi Ceesay, the National Assembly Member for Serrekunda West from the Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), called on the government to reduce civil servants’ allowances in order to address an increased budget of D18.5 billion for the year 2024. Ceesay emphasized the importance of cutting down on the allowances of civil servants to align with the budgetary requirements.
According to Ceesay, a significant portion of the budget is allocated towards paying salaries, allowances for civil servants, and travel expenses. He highlighted that in cases of budget deficits, the government often resorts to taking out loans, which can result in challenges when it comes to servicing debts. Ceesay stressed the importance of utilizing funds wisely to avoid accumulating more debt and financial strain on the country.
Ceesay also pointed out that the D30 million earmarked for the presidential nationwide tour could have been reduced to address the budget shortfall more effectively. Despite some NAMs voting against the allocation for the presidential tour, the decision was made to allocate the funds, highlighting the need for better management of budget allocations to control debt levels in the country.
Additionally, Ceesay proposed that the government should prioritize investments in the agricultural sector to reduce the high costs associated with importing basic commodities such as rice, onions, and vegetable oil. By focusing on enhancing local agricultural production, the country can reduce its reliance on imported goods, thereby lowering overall expenses and promoting food security.
Ceesay’s call for fiscal responsibility and strategic budget management reflects the need for the government to prioritize sustainable financial practices in order to address budget deficits and debt challenges effectively. By reevaluating spending priorities, emphasizing prudent financial management, and prioritizing investments in key sectors like agriculture, the government can work towards a more stable and economically sustainable future for The Gambia.
With a growing focus on fiscal accountability and efficient resource allocation, there is potential for positive changes in the management of public finances and the overall economic landscape of the country. By heeding Ceesay’s advice and implementing targeted measures to address budgetary concerns, The Gambia can move towards a more financially secure and prosperous future for its citizens.
