The Minister for Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources, Hon. Rohey John Manjang, recently addressed lawmakers, revealing that the President had instructed her Ministry to establish a sustainable national waste management system. The Ministry has already begun engaging with a Senegalese waste management institution established by the Senegalese government to develop and implement a waste management solution by the end of 2024.

Hon. Rohey John Manjang emphasized that the National Environment Agency (NEA) is primarily responsible for regulating waste collection, disposal, and management. She also highlighted that the National Environment Management Act will introduce a more comprehensive approach to handling and prosecuting environmental matters. The Ministry aims to centralize these efforts to ensure effective implementation.

Furthermore, the Minister mentioned that a new bill, nearing implementation, will empower the NEA to address environmental issues in a more efficient manner. The NEA has recruited a legal expert to handle cases related to environmental issues, with the approval of the Justice Minister. This move is expected to enhance efforts in combating anti-littering and other environmental challenges.

These developments were disclosed during a question and answer session between National Assembly Members (NAMs) and Ministers on Thursday, March 21st, at the National Assembly in Banjul.

The initiative to establish a sustainable national waste management system reflects a commitment to addressing environmental challenges and promoting a cleaner and healthier environment in The Gambia. By collaborating with a reputable waste management institution from Senegal, the Ministry aims to leverage their expertise and experience to design and implement effective waste management solutions.

The focus on centralizing waste management efforts under the NEA and empowering the agency to handle environmental legal matters indicates a shift towards more organized and proactive measures in addressing environmental issues. With the recruitment of a legal expert dedicated to handling environmental cases, the Ministry is poised to strengthen enforcement measures and promote compliance with environmental regulations.

Overall, the efforts of the Ministry for Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources, under the directive of the President, underscore a proactive approach to environmental management in The Gambia. By coordinating with stakeholders, adopting best practices, and enhancing regulatory frameworks, the Ministry aims to achieve a sustainable and environmentally-friendly waste management system for the benefit of the country and its citizens.
