I am a concerned citizen of The Gambia who is currently residing in the UK (Scotland) and also a member of the ruling party, the Scottish National Party (SNP). I feel compelled to bring an important issue to your attention regarding the demolition activities that are currently taking place in our beloved nation under your leadership.
The initial phase of clearing the roads from obstructions and untidiness was widely supported by the majority of the population as it was deemed necessary. However, the ongoing Phase 2 of the demolition is causing more harm than good to the people who entrusted you with their votes and the responsibility to protect and provide jobs for them.
The actions of Mr. Manneh and his team are resulting in significant hardships and loss of earnings for the citizens. It is disheartening to witness the destruction of people’s properties without any regard for their livelihoods. The forced removal of vendors and fruit sellers who are simply trying to make a living without causing any obstruction to road users is unjust and inhumane.
Traditionally, trading has been a way of life for the people of The Gambia, and it should be encouraged rather than discouraged in such a harsh manner. The lack of alternative plans or compensation for those whose businesses have been demolished is a failure on the part of the government to protect its citizens.
It is imperative that a more compassionate and strategic approach is taken to address the needs of these individuals who are being adversely affected by the demolition activities. Instead of resorting to force and disregard for the well-being of the people, there should be a plan in place to relocate them and provide them with the necessary support to continue their businesses.
I urge you, Mr. President, to take immediate action on this matter and intervene to prevent further harm to the citizens of our nation. It is crucial that you listen to the cries of the people who are suffering as a result of these actions and ensure that justice is served.
I hope that you will consider my plea and take the necessary steps to rectify this situation before more damage is done to the lives and livelihoods of the people of The Gambia. Ramadan Mubarak to you and your family.
Sincerely,
Deddeg Cham
