The Police Intervention Unit personnel of the Gambia Police Force recently completed specialized training in VIP protection, special operations, and key areas of security responsibility. The three-month security training was conducted by the Turkish Gendarmerie as part of the Turkey-Gambia relationship. The objective of the training was to equip the Gambia police officers with the necessary skills for peace and security maintenance leading up to the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) meeting scheduled for May 2024.

Commissioner Adlin Basangeh, Head of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU), emphasized the importance of the training and urged the graduates to apply the skills acquired during the 12-week period effectively. He highlighted the ongoing security reforms and training initiatives within the Gambia police force since 2017, stressing the PIU’s role in contributing to a professional and competent security force.

A total of 180 security personnel, divided into four batches, underwent an intensive 12-week training program covering various aspects such as protection techniques, VIP protection duties, room and building clearing techniques, and more. Commissioner Basangeh reminded the graduates of their solemn responsibilities and rules as they prepared to enter the next phase of their careers.

Deputy Inspector General of the Gambia Police Force, Momodou Sowe, challenged the trainees to execute their tasks diligently for the peace and security of the nation, especially as the Gambia geared up to host the upcoming OIC meeting. He acknowledged the long-standing partnership between the Turkish Gendarmerie and the Gambia security forces dating back to the 1990s.

Turkish Ambassador to The Gambia, Turker Abo, commended the discipline and dedication displayed by the participants throughout the training program. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to witness the closing ceremony and praised the collaboration between the Turkish Gendarmerie and the Gambian security forces.

The importance of the training in preparation for the OIC Summit was emphasized, as security measures would be crucial for the success of the event. Certificates were awarded to the trainees in recognition of their outstanding commitment to the course.

The training not only focused on technical skills but also provided opportunities for cultural exchange and relationship-building among participants from different security agencies. The collaborative effort between the Turkish Gendarmerie and the Gambian security forces was noted for its positive impact on the professionalism and readiness of the personnel involved.

In conclusion, the successful completion of the specialized training program for VIP protection and special operations marked a significant milestone for the Gambia Police Force and the country as a whole. The skills and knowledge gained by the graduates would undoubtedly enhance their ability to respond effectively to security threats and challenges, contributing to the overall safety and security of the nation.
