In a recent session at the National Assembly, concerns were raised by several parliamentarians regarding the increase in road accidents across the country. This was prompted by Honourable Sulayman Saho, a member of Badibou Central, who highlighted the alarming rise in fatal accidents in the country. He emphasized the need to address the high rate of accidents, particularly on the Trans-Gambia Highway, which has led to an increase in deaths and injuries.

Health Minister Honourable Momodou Lamin Samateh also acknowledged the severity of the situation, noting that The Gambia has a higher rate of deaths due to accidents and injuries compared to many other countries, including developed nations. During a validation meeting for the National Trauma and Injury plan, statistics revealed an increase in trauma cases from 5000 in 2017 to 9000 in 2021, underscoring the urgent need for action.

Honourable Saho called for an emergency meeting involving the Inspector General of Police, Ministry of Health, and National Road Authority to address this national crisis. Other lawmakers, such as Honourable Muhammed Kanteh, expressed concerns about the historical road traffic issues in The Gambia, with data from the police force indicating an average of 121 deaths annually due to road accidents.

Suggestions were made to address the issue of drivers under the influence of alcohol and distractions such as phone usage while driving. It was emphasized that immediate action is required to prevent further loss of lives and property. Lawmakers highlighted the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and increased responsibility from the police in ensuring road safety.

The opening of the new road along the Bertil Herding Highway was also brought into the discussion, with Honourable Fatoumatta Njie pointing out the rise in deadly accidents since its inception. Recommendations were made for more street lights to improve visibility and safety on the roads.

Honourable Lamin J Sanneh suggested that the National Assembly should come up with resolutions promptly to address the issue of road accidents. He emphasized the importance of implementing good laws to curb indiscipline on the roads. Honourable Sainey Jawara highlighted the outdated Road Traffic Act of 1947, calling for revisions to reflect the current road safety challenges and ensure the proper issuance of licenses.

In conclusion, the parliamentarians agreed that the issue of road accidents is a pressing concern that requires immediate action. Recommendations were made to improve road safety measures, review existing laws, and enhance enforcement to protect the lives and properties of all Gambians. It is imperative for all relevant authorities and stakeholders to work together to address this national crisis effectively.
