Binta Jaiteh reports on the concerns raised by Karama Njie, the Spokesperson of North Bank Region (NBR), regarding the leadership of the Kerewan Area Council under Chairman Papa Tunkara. Njie expressed his dissatisfaction with Tunkara’s leadership style, labeling him as incompetent to rule the council.
In a conversation with the media, Njie emphasized that the current state of the Kerewan Area Council is disappointing to both the residents of North Bank and Gambians in general. He pointed out that politics should not be prioritized over the well-being of taxpayers, and councils should be led by experienced individuals who possess the necessary academic qualifications and leadership skills.
Njie criticized the decision of the region’s voters to elect Chairman Tunkara despite his perceived lack of qualifications. He stressed the importance of selecting leaders carefully, as the progress of the country is dependent on such decisions. Njie warned against political interference in government affairs, noting that it could lead to ongoing problems within the country.
As the spokesperson for NBR, Njie highlighted the Chairman’s responsibilities, including convening and presiding over the Council’s general meetings to make strategic decisions for the region. He expressed concern over the absence of such meetings, which could hinder the council’s responsiveness and development.
Additionally, Njie raised concerns about the long-term absence of both the Chairman and the CEO from the council, which he viewed as a lack of respect for the council’s progress. He also alluded to suspicions of corruption in the Chairman’s conduct, particularly in his management of the council’s funds. Njie called for an investigation by the Local Government Commission of Inquiry to look into possible financial mismanagement and corruption within the Kerewan Area Council.
In conclusion, Njie urged for transparency, accountability, and effective leadership within the Kerewan Area Council to ensure the region’s development and the well-being of its residents. It is essential for local administrative councils to be led by competent individuals who prioritize the interests of the community and uphold ethical standards in their roles. The concerns raised by Njie underscore the importance of good governance in fostering progress and prosperity within local communities.
