The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Gambia Secretariat hosted a meeting on the 22nd of February, inviting media chiefs and senior reporters from across the country to discuss their partnership in the upcoming OIC summit scheduled to be held in The Gambia on the 4th and 5th of May. The theme of the summit is “Enhancing Unity and Solidarity Through Dialogue for Sustainable Development”.
This summit, considered to be the second largest gathering of world leaders, is a significant event for The Gambia as it will be the first time the country hosts such an international gathering. The CEO of OIC, Mr Yankuba Dibba, emphasized the importance of the media in development work, highlighting their role as the Fourth Estate of any country.
Mr Dibba expressed the significance of the summit, stating that it is the second most important gathering after the United Nations General Assembly. With 57 member countries across all continents, the summit is expected to welcome dignitaries from around the world to The Gambia in late April. He described the OIC summit as a transformational project and a national endeavor that will provide the country with a facelift in terms of infrastructure and diplomatic relations.
Acknowledging the media as crucial partners in this journey, Mr Dibba emphasized their role in recording history and shaping narratives. Mr Ade Daramy, the Editor in Chief of QTV, echoed this sentiment, describing the upcoming summit as a game changer and underscoring the important role of the media in such events.
The 15th summit of the OIC, to be hosted for the first time in The Gambia and only the second time in sub-Saharan Africa, presents an opportunity for the country to showcase its unity, solidarity, and commitment to sustainable development. Daramy highlighted the media’s role as conveyers of information and facilitators of dialogue, emphasizing the impact they can have in connecting diverse cultures and perspectives.
Through comprehensive coverage, insightful storytelling, and responsible reporting, the media can illuminate the rich tapestry of the nation’s heritage, the values that bind the population together, and the discussions that will drive progress and development. The meeting with media chiefs and senior reporters was a step towards strengthening their partnership and ensuring that the upcoming OIC summit is a success.
In conclusion, the OIC summit in The Gambia represents a significant milestone for the country and an opportunity to promote unity, solidarity, and sustainable development. The media’s partnership and role in shaping narratives and facilitating dialogue will be crucial in ensuring the success of this international gathering.
