Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, the Deputy Managing Director of the National Roads Authority (NRA), recently spoke to and inspired young aspiring engineering students from the University of Science, Engineering, and Technology (USET) as well as students from various high schools within the Greater Banjul Area. Janneh was the special guest at the World Engineering Day celebration for Sustainable Development organized by USET, where he shared his insights and experiences with the students.

During his speech, Janneh emphasized the importance of science in engineering, stating that engineering is essentially applied science. He highlighted the need for a strong foundation in subjects like mathematics, physics, and chemistry for anyone aspiring to become an engineer. Janneh encouraged the students to work hard, stay determined, and remain focused if they want to succeed in the field of engineering.

Janneh shared a personal anecdote about his journey to becoming an engineer. He revealed that his father, Saihou Sumareh, was one of the first engineers in the country and that seeing his father’s work inspired him to follow in his footsteps. However, Janneh initially struggled to figure out his path as a high school student and even considered pursuing a career in writing due to his talent in that area. It was only after traveling to the United States and witnessing the massive buildings there that Janneh’s interest in engineering was piqued. He was fascinated by the construction process and decided to pursue a career in engineering.

Throughout his career, Janneh learned the importance of applying scientific principles to real-world problems. He stressed the practical aspect of engineering, noting that engineers are tasked with translating scientific knowledge into tangible solutions. Janneh’s journey serves as a reminder to aspiring engineers that curiosity, determination, and a willingness to learn are essential traits for success in the field.

The students in attendance were inspired by Janneh’s story and encouraged to pursue their dreams with passion and dedication. The event was a valuable opportunity for them to gain insights into the world of engineering and to learn from an experienced professional in the field. Janneh’s words resonated with the students, reminding them that with hard work and perseverance, they too can achieve their goals in the field of engineering.

Overall, Janneh’s speech was a motivating and enlightening experience for the young students, providing them with valuable advice and encouragement as they embark on their journey towards a career in engineering. Janneh’s story serves as a testament to the power of determination and the importance of following one’s passion in the pursuit of success.
