Hon. Amadou Camara, the National Assembly member for Nianija constituency, recently cautioned the staff of the Office of the Clerk of the National Assembly against engaging in partisan politics, especially when it comes to internal matters involving members. This warning was issued during a debate on the resolutions of the Public Petitions Committee concerning the Petition of the GT Board’s concerned Staff.
During the debate, Hon. Camara expressed his dissatisfaction with the way the committee operations were being handled, stating that he had never been offended by any committee operation as he was by this one. He emphasized that no one should assume that he had any vested interest in a matter without him declaring it himself. The petition in question had been brought forward during the previous legislature when Hon. Camara was a founding member of the committee.
Hon. Camara raised concerns about the attendance list provided in the report, noting that several committee members, including the vice chairperson Hon. Fatou Jawara, were not present during the validation. He questioned the credibility of the report and expressed his disappointment in the way the matter was being handled.
Other members of the National Assembly also voiced their concerns during the debate. Hon. Sainey Jawara from Lower Saloum insisted that clarity was needed for the public to understand the situation. Similarly, Hon. Almamy Gibba from Foni Kansala remarked that a significant number of committee members were absent during the proceedings.
In response to the growing unrest among members, Hon. Camara proposed a motion for the committee to revisit the issue and resolve any discrepancies. Acting Speaker, Hon. Billay G Tunkara, advised that every report should be thoroughly reviewed to ensure accuracy and fairness.
Consequently, the acting Speaker suggested suspending the debate on the Public Petitions resolutions to allow the committee members to reconcile and report back to Parliament with a unified response.
In conclusion, Hon. Amadou Camara’s warning to the staff of the Office of the Clerk of the National Assembly serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining neutrality and professionalism in all parliamentary activities. The debate on the Public Petitions resolutions highlights the need for thorough and transparent processes to uphold the integrity of the National Assembly. By addressing internal conflicts and discrepancies openly, the Assembly can demonstrate its commitment to serving the public interest effectively.
