The Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, Talib Ahmed Bensouda, organized an “Iftar” (breaking fast) event for the residents of KM at the Westfield Youth Monument on Friday, 29th March. The purpose of this event was to honor the holy month of Ramadan and was well attended by many residents.
Mayor Bensouda mentioned that this was not the first time such an event was organized by the municipality. He stated, “This is not the first time, we have done this over the years and we want to keep up the tradition. It’s the annual Iftar program for all residents of KM.” He emphasized that Ramadan is a month of giving and helping the needy, and Iftar holds significant importance in Ramadan. He encouraged those with the means to do the same for the less privileged in the community.
Hon. Famara Fofana, the Councilor of Kololi ward, also attended the event and praised Mayor Bensouda for his initiative. He remarked, “This is something we do every year in the month of Ramadan under the leadership of Lord Mayor Bensouda. It is very important because Ramadan is a month of sharing and giving. The mayor and his councils come together and humble themselves to eat Iftar together with their residents; this is something very commendable and should continue.”
One of the beneficiaries of the Iftar, Fatou Saho, expressed her gratitude for the initiative. She highlighted the significance of Ramadan for Muslims and urged wealthy Muslims to help the less privileged during this month. She said, “I thank the honorable Mayor for this wonderful initiative and I urge people who have the means to help anyone in the month of Ramadan to do so because this is a month that expenses are so much on people, especially the less privileged.”
Overall, the event was a successful and meaningful gathering that captured the spirit of Ramadan and community unity. The act of coming together to break fast and share meals showcased the importance of giving back to the community, especially during a month as sacred as Ramadan. The Mayor’s commitment to continuing this tradition and encouraging others to do the same reflects a sense of solidarity and compassion within the Kanifing Municipal Council.
In conclusion, initiatives like the Ramadan Iftar event organized by Mayor Bensouda serve as an example of how community leaders can bring people together, promote generosity, and foster a sense of unity and compassion among residents. It is through such acts of kindness and sharing that communities can grow stronger and support those in need, especially during significant religious observances like Ramadan.
