The highly potent Kush strain has caused a surge in medical emergencies in The Gambia, with 25 individuals seeking attention at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) between December 2023 and February 2024. Dr. Abubacarr Jagne, the Deputy Chief Medical Director of EFSTH, described the situation as alarming as patients struggled to control their tongues and experienced withdrawal symptoms.
According to Dr. Jagne, patients exhibited unusual symptoms such as difficulty controlling their tongues, leading to concerns of being choked. He speculated that these symptoms may be due to additives mixed with the drugs they consumed. In some cases, family members had to hold their tongues to prevent them from biting themselves, and the hospital had to suture tongues to lips to prevent further harm.
Most of the patients seeking medical attention were between the ages of 14 and 17, prompting Dr. Jagne to express shock and concern over the impact of Kush on young individuals. He emphasized the need for immediate action to address the situation and urged vigilance in identifying those affected and providing them with timely medical intervention.
Dr. Jagne also called on family members to take responsibility for preventing the spread and consequences of Kush within their homes. It is crucial to recognize the symptoms of Kush use and withdrawal and seek medical help promptly to address the underlying issues.
The rise in Kush-related medical emergencies serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with potent strains of drugs and the importance of proactive measures to address substance abuse issues. By raising awareness, promoting early intervention, and encouraging responsible behavior, we can work towards minimizing the impact of such drugs on individuals and communities.
In conclusion, the prevalence of Kush-related medical emergencies highlights the need for collaborative efforts between healthcare professionals, families, and communities to address substance abuse effectively. By staying vigilant, taking prompt action, and promoting a culture of responsibility, we can mitigate the harm caused by potent drugs like Kush and protect the well-being of individuals, especially our youth.
