The Kanifing Environmental Transformation Program (KEPT) has made a significant impact on the waste management capabilities of the Kanifing Municipality Council (KMC) by donating a range of essential equipment. The donation, which included 700 waste bins, two waste trucks, five motorcycles, one tricycle, and two lawnmowers, was presented to the council during a ceremony organized for this purpose.
Mayor Talib Ahmad Bensonda of the Kanifing Municipality expressed the challenges faced in waste management in The Gambia, particularly in the densely-populated Kanifing Municipality. He highlighted that the municipality generates the highest amount of waste in the country, making it a significant challenge to manage effectively.
Mayor Bensouda pointed out that when his administration took over the council, there were limited resources available for waste management. He noted that they started with virtually no resources specifically allocated to waste management, with only two nearly unusable trucks and two dilapidated tractors at their disposal. However, under his leadership, the Kanifing Municipality has emerged as one of the most robust municipalities in the sub-region.
Bakary B. Darboe, the Project Manager for KMC’s Mballit Project, emphasized that the donated equipment would greatly support the Mbalit Unit and the Environment and Sanitation Unit in addressing the waste collection challenges faced by the council. He stated that the donation would also aid in efforts to eliminate illegal dumpsites within the municipality, particularly in communities like Ebo-Town and New Jeshwang, located near the river where indiscriminate dumping often occurs.
Darboe extended his gratitude to Mayor Bensouda and the General Council for their dedication and commitment to transforming the municipality. He highlighted the valuable contribution of the donation towards enhancing waste management efforts within the Kanifing Municipality.
The Kanifing Environmental Transformation Program (KEPT) plays a critical role in supporting the waste management initiatives of the Kanifing Municipality Council (KMC). The recent donation of essential equipment, including waste bins, trucks, motorcycles, tricycles, and lawnmowers, has significantly bolstered the council’s waste management capabilities.
Mayor Talib Ahmad Bensonda highlighted the challenges faced in waste management within the Kanifing Municipality, emphasizing the urgent need for improved waste collection services. He acknowledged the high volume of waste generated in the municipality, attributing it to the dense population in the region.
Despite initial resource constraints, Mayor Bensouda’s administration has made remarkable progress in strengthening the waste management infrastructure of the Kanifing Municipality. With a strategic approach and effective collaboration with partners like the Kanifing Environmental Transformation Program (KEPT), the council has been able to enhance its waste management operations significantly.
The donation of waste bins, trucks, motorcycles, tricycles, and lawnmowers will play a crucial role in improving waste collection services and addressing the challenges of illegal dumping within the municipality. The equipment provided by KEPT will support the Mbalit Unit and the Environment and Sanitation Unit in their efforts to maintain a clean and hygienic environment for residents of the Kanifing Municipality.
Overall, the collaboration between KEPT and the Kanifing Municipality Council (KMC) reflects a shared commitment to sustainable waste management practices and environmental conservation. Through continued support and partnership, both entities strive to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable living environment for all residents of the Kanifing Municipality.
