The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Kerewan Area Council have expressed their appreciation for the council’s decision to include women in the District Tribunal Court in seven districts across the North Bank Region (NBR) for the first time. This move is seen as a significant step in promoting gender equality and ensuring fair dispensation of justice for women in the region.

Chief George L Sonko of Lower Nuimi, speaking in Essau, highlighted the importance of women’s inclusion in the District Tribunal Court. He emphasized that this decision will not only strengthen women’s capacity but also provide them with a platform to seek justice in a fair and equitable manner. Chief Sonko also used the opportunity to condemn illegal logging activities in Bakindick and other areas, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior.

Other local chiefs, including Chief Alagie Jagne, Momodou Chatty Cham, and Mustapha Dibba from Central Badibou, Upper Nuimi, and Upper Badibou respectively, also welcomed the council’s decision. They agreed that women’s inclusion in the tribunal court will empower women to express themselves and receive fair treatment in the justice system.

Ma’am Sainabou Martin Sonko, the Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman Papa Tunkara of Kerewan Area Council reiterated their commitment to improving service delivery at the tribunal. They mentioned that all seven districts have appointed female members to the tribunal, and the council has also increased the transport allowance from D1000 to D3000 to facilitate their participation.

This inclusive approach to justice administration is a positive step towards gender equality and ensuring that all members of the community have equal access to justice. By involving women in the decision-making process at the District Tribunal Court, the Kerewan Area Council is setting a precedent for other local governments to follow suit and promote gender inclusivity in the justice system.

In conclusion, the efforts of the Kerewan Area Council to include women in the District Tribunal Court in the North Bank Region are commendable. This move not only promotes gender equality but also ensures that women have a voice in the justice system and can seek fair treatment. It is essential for all stakeholders to work together to create a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone has equal access to justice.
