Patience Loum highlights the prosecution’s perspective in the trial of former Gambian interior minister Ousman Sonko for crimes against humanity. The prosecutor believes that ex-dictator Yahya Jammeh initiated “coup investigation” panels to target the civilian population. This conclusion was reached after examining the systematic oppression by Jammeh and his associates.

Ousman Sonko is facing trial in a Swiss court for various alleged crimes against humanity. The prosecution outlined a range of attacks orchestrated by Jammeh, including unlawful arrests, torture, and severe human rights violations like rape, sexual abuse, and murder. Referring to the Gambia’s Truth Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), over 200 Gambians and non-Gambians were extrajudicially killed on Jammeh’s orders, with an additional 100 victims falling prey to his regime’s atrocities.

The prosecutor in Sonko’s trial emphasized the systematic nature of these crimes, where various entities collaborated in carrying them out. The NIA, the PIU, the army, prison services, and state guards, including the “junglers,” were implicated. The NIA and “junglers” followed Jammeh’s directives, while the state guard, police, and prison services acted under the Interior Ministry led by Sonko.

In addition to housing criminals, the Mile II Prison also held individuals and politicians perceived as enemies of the State. Political detainees faced severe human rights violations and suppression, instilling fear in the civilian population. Jammeh implemented legal strategies and reforms to grant immunity to himself and his cohorts, shielding them from prosecution.

The Swiss court heard testimonies detailing how the government prioritized maintaining power at all costs, resorting to criminal acts. Those critical of the regime were labeled enemies of the State, subjected to public intimidation, threats, and dehumanization.

Overall, the prosecution’s narrative sheds light on the severe crimes committed under Jammeh’s rule and the complicit roles played by various agencies. The trial of Ousman Sonko serves as a critical juncture in seeking justice for the victims of these heinous acts and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
