Gunjur, located 188km away from Kudang, is known as one of the most intellectual towns in The Gambia. Within this cerebral town, one of the most prominent figures was Hatab Bojang, who had a significant impact on the development of Islam in the region. Born in 1937 in Gunjur to Pa Sano Bojang and Mariama Cham, Hatab Bojang showed exceptional diligence and intelligence from a young age. At the age of seven, his father entrusted him to study under Abdullah Ibn Sheikh Siddiyah in Mauritania, where he excelled and memorized the Qur’an.
After completing his studies in Mauritania, Hatab continued his education at the Islamic University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia and later at the Omdurman Islamic University in Sudan. Upon his return to The Gambia, he taught Islamic and Arabic studies at the Muhammedan School in Banjul before establishing his own Islamic/Arabic school in Gunjur. He went on to build similar schools in neighboring villages and expanded his reach to countries like Sierra Leone and Ghana.
Hatab Bojang was not only an educator but also an activist and advocate for Islamic teachings. He was known for his outspoken nature and his willingness to address social issues. This led to his arrest in 1983 following political turmoil, but he was eventually released by the government. Despite facing challenges, Hatab remained committed to his mission of spreading knowledge and understanding of Islam.
Throughout his life, Hatab Bojang influenced many young people, including prominent figures like Muhammad Lamin Touray and Essa Darboe. His commitment to education and social justice left a lasting impact on the community. Tragically, he passed away in 1984 while in prayer at his wife’s home in Serekunda.
