As the month of Ramadan comes to a close, the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC) has issued a press release urging the Muslim community to watch for the sighting of the crescent moon at sunset on the 8th of April. This year, Ramadan fasting began on the 10th of March and is expected to last for either 29 or 30 days. If the moon is sighted on the 29th day of Ramadan, then the next month, Shawwal, will begin. However, if the moon is not seen on the 29th day and is obscured by clouds on the 30th day, then Shawwal will begin even without the moon being seen.
In the search for the crescent moon, the GSIC emphasizes the importance of cooperation and righteousness, as stated in the Holy Quran. The Fatwa and Moon Sighting Committee of the GSIC urges all Muslims to work together in sighting the moon of Shawwal and to report any information to the committee and GSIC’s Regional Representatives. Verification of information is also encouraged before sharing any news.
To keep the Muslim community informed, the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council will make an official announcement on national and local television stations at 8:15 pm on the 8th of April, as well as on various online media outlets.
It is important for Muslims to come together and cooperate in the sighting of the crescent moon to ensure unity and unanimity in their practices. By working together and sharing information, the community can strive towards the truth and righteousness outlined in the Quran.
The GSIC’s press release emphasizes the importance of verification and substantiation of information before it is shared, highlighting the need for accuracy and reliability in communication. This ensures that the information reaching the Muslim community is correct and aligned with the teachings of Islam.
The sighting of the crescent moon marks the beginning of a new month in the Islamic calendar and is a significant event for Muslims around the world. By following the guidelines set out by the GSIC and cooperating in the search for the moon, the Muslim community can come together in unity and piety during this special time.
As the month of Ramadan draws to a close, the anticipation of the sighting of the crescent moon and the start of Shawwal is a time of reflection and celebration for Muslims. By following the guidance of the GSIC and working together in righteousness and piety, the community can come together in unity and harmony.
