The Kairaba Beach Hotel recently played host to another memorable event, the Gambia Revenue Authority Taxpayers’ Awards Night and Recognition. The event was graced by esteemed personalities including President Adama Barrow, senior government officials, ex-customs chiefs, Senegal Director General of Customs, and members of the business community. This event, introduced six years ago by Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe, aims to acknowledge and celebrate tax compliance, highlighting the importance that GRA places on compliance in revenue mobilization efforts.

The 2023 awards night was particularly significant for the GRA as it exceeded expectations by growing the country’s tax revenue from D12.8 billion in 2022 to D15.7 billion, surpassing its revenue target of D15.2 billion by D581.70 million. This represented a 24% nominal growth in revenue performance, showcasing the authority’s exceptional performance. In March 2023, the GRA also achieved a milestone by breaking its monthly revenue collection record, collecting a whopping D1.5 billion, the highest tax revenue collected in a single month in the authority’s history.

President Adama Barrow was present to award the top 10 corporate bodies and individuals, emphasizing the importance of tax compliance and the role it plays in supporting government initiatives. GRA Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe expressed the significance of the event in strengthening the relationship between the authority and taxpayers, recognizing and appreciating their compliance efforts. He highlighted the impact of taxpayers’ contributions in funding government projects that benefit all Gambians.

The GRA Board Chairperson, Madam Lucy Fye Jagne, commended the authority’s commitment to excellence and innovation in tax administration. She noted the recognition received from international financial institutions for being among the leading revenue collectors in Africa. The operational methods of GRA, including the Asycunda World system, have been lauded by officials from the International Monetary Fund and World Bank for their outstanding performance.

The awards night not only celebrates the achievements of taxpayers but also serves as a reminder of the essential role they play in supporting government initiatives and funding development projects. The event highlights the partnership between the GRA and taxpayers in advancing the country’s economic growth and prosperity.

In conclusion, the Gambia Revenue Authority Taxpayers’ Awards Night and Recognition is a testament to the dedication and commitment of individuals and businesses in fulfilling their civic duty through tax compliance. The event serves as a platform to appreciate their contributions and underscore the vital role they play in nation-building.
