The Gambia Inclusive and Resilient Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (GIRAV) recently conducted a six-day training session in collaboration with the Regional Grievances Redress Committee for the North Bank Region. This training took place in Ndofan Village, Lower Nuimi District, and aimed to empower members of Women and Youth-led Agribusiness firms from the villages of Ndofan and Ndungu Kebbeh.
Over 40 participants attended the training, which is part of a nationwide sensitization campaign targeting members of 40 Women and Youth-led Agribusiness Firms. These participants will each receive a hectare garden equipped with modern solar-powered irrigation systems, perimeter fencing, and capacity building for year-round commercial production.
Funded by a $40 million grant from the World Bank, the GIRAV project is a five-year initiative that will be executed by the Ministry of Agriculture and implemented by the Central Projects Coordinating Unit (CPCU) across the country. The project aims to establish 40 agribusiness firms and construct 200 km of access roads to improve market access for farmers.
One of the key aspects of the GIRAV project is its focus on environmental sustainability. The Environmental Specialist, Lamin Camara, emphasized the importance of sensitization in overall development, as it helps raise awareness on how to prevent and address grievances related to project interventions. The construction of access roads and gardens is expected to boost food production, improve nutrition, and contribute to poverty reduction in the region.
Camara also stressed the need for beneficiary communities to actively collaborate with contractors to ensure the successful implementation of sub-projects. Representatives from the local community, including Alh. Modou Sarr and Ebou Sarr, Chief Representatives of Lower Nuimi and Alkalo of Ndofan, commended the GIRAV project for its efforts. They highlighted the positive impact that the establishment of gardens in Ndofan and Ndungu Kebbeh would have on food security and sustainable development in the area.
Overall, the GIRAV project is a significant initiative aimed at empowering women and youth in agribusiness, improving market access, and enhancing sustainable agriculture practices. Through trainings, capacity building, and infrastructure development, the project is set to make a positive impact on the agricultural sector in The Gambia.
