Smugglers are constantly adapting to evade authorities in their quest to smuggle people from The Gambia to the EU. The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has ramped up surveillance at traditional launchpads for irregular migration, prompting smugglers to seek out new routes.

Historically, areas like the North Bank Region, Banjul, Bakau, and the southern coastline were popular launchpads for irregular sea journeys to Europe. However, the GID launched Operation Zero Departure (OZD) in response to a significant increase in attempts at irregular migration. In 2023 alone, the GID intercepted over 300 individuals and 29 boats as they tried to make their way to Europe.

As the GID cracks down on irregular migration, smugglers are finding new ways to evade detection. Director General Seedy Muktarr Touray noted that the dynamics of irregular migration are constantly evolving. Smugglers and migrants now travel up to 100km from Banjul, venturing to places like Bwiam in the Fonis and Sutusinjang to begin their journey. This shift in strategy is a new phenomenon, but the GID remains vigilant and proactive in apprehending smugglers.

Touray emphasized that the GID is up to the challenge, successfully apprehending smugglers at new launchpads like Touba Kolong in Nuimi, Bwiam, Sutusinjang, and even in his hometown of Pirang at Bonto. Patrols are conducted regularly, including during odd hours, to ensure smugglers are caught before they can embark on their journeys. Additionally, the GID gathers intelligence from communities to stay ahead of smugglers’ movements.

The GID’s efforts have been effective in disrupting irregular migration routes, with 164 post views indicating heightened interest in the issue. Despite the challenges posed by evolving tactics from smugglers, the GID remains committed to its mission of preventing irregular migration and ensuring the safety of all involved.

In conclusion, the ongoing battle against smugglers shifting launchpads for EU migration highlights the importance of constant vigilance and adaptation by law enforcement agencies. The GID’s proactive approach and collaboration with communities are crucial in disrupting illegal activities and protecting individuals from the dangers of irregular migration. By staying ahead of the curve and responding to new challenges, authorities can continue to thwart smugglers’ attempts and safeguard the well-being of all individuals involved.
