The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) recently laid the foundation stones for three new Immigration Border Posts in Kerr Ali, Amdalai, and Giboro. This project, valued at $2.2 million, is part of the “Enhancing Border Management Capacities of The Government of The Gambia to Promote Peace, Stability and Security” initiative. Funded by the People of Japan and implemented by IOM and GID, the project aims to enhance operational systems, human resources, and technical capacities of border management authorities to facilitate safe and orderly migration while addressing security threats and irregular migration.

The Regional Immigration Commissioner of North Bank Region, Mustapha Seghore, emphasized the importance of these new structures in expanding the MIDAS Systems and improving overall border management practices. He expressed gratitude to the Government of Japan for funding the project and commended the effective implementation by the Gambia Immigration Department.

Ambassador of Japan Izawa Osamu highlighted Japan’s support for The Gambia’s security sector, particularly in strengthening border management to maintain peace and stability. He emphasized the role of peace and stability in driving economic and social development in Africa, reiterating Japan’s commitment to supporting security initiatives in the region.

Governor Lamin Saidykhan of North Bank Region thanked the government and people of Japan for sponsoring the projects, emphasizing the importance of putting national interests above individual interests. He called on communities to collaborate with security forces to ensure safety and report any suspicious activities to maintain a secure environment.

Chief of Mission International Organization for Migration, Mr. Emmanuel Murwisi, acknowledged the collaborative efforts between IOM, the Government of The Gambia, and GID in promoting safe and orderly migration, enhancing border coordination, and contributing to socio-economic development. He highlighted the achievements in border management operations since 2018, made possible through the generous support of the Government of Japan.

Minister of Interior, Hon. Seyaka Sonko, emphasized the significance of the new border posts in facilitating the flow of people, goods, and services, contributing to the socio-economic development of the country. Deputy Director General of Gambia Immigration Department, Hulay Jallow Cham, highlighted the project’s focus on promoting peace, stability, and security through enhanced border management capacities and emphasized the importance of intra-African migration movements.

Following the ceremony, the Gambia Immigration Department received three brand new vehicles to support their border management operations. The investment in infrastructure and resources demonstrates a commitment to effective border management, fostering safe and orderly migration, and enhancing security in The Gambia. The collaboration between the Government of Japan, IOM, and GID reflects a shared commitment to promoting peace, stability, and security in the region.
