The Mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick Lowe, has recently enlisted the expertise of a Ghanaian administrator, politician, and former Kumasi Mayor to assist in restructuring and enhancing the capacity of her staff. This move comes as part of an effort to support the country’s first Youth Volunteerism Scheme, which aims to provide skills training for over 500 Gambian youths.
The Ghanaian administrator in question is Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi, who currently serves as the executive director of the Ghana National Service Scheme (NSS). Mr. Antwi brings with him a wealth of experience and qualifications, including a Graduate Diploma in Management Studies from the Institute of Commercial Management in the United Kingdom, as well as an MBA in Marketing from the Paris Graduate School of Management. He is also a certified member of the Institute of Commercial Management and holds memberships in both the Institute of Financial Accountants (IFA), United Kingdom, and the International Professional Manager Association (IPMA), United Kingdom.
Addressing journalists, Mayor Lowe emphasized the pressing need for capacity building within the council and highlighted the discussions that have taken place between Mr. Antwi and the BCC CEO regarding areas that require immediate attention. She expressed the council’s desire for Mr. Antwi to assist in coordinating efforts related to youth voluntarism and securing funding for necessary equipment and resources.
Mayor Lowe further disclosed plans to dispatch a team of local governance experts to Banjul to collaborate with the council on a pro-bono basis. She underscored the council’s commitment to prioritizing youth and women’s empowerment, citing the enrollment of seventy youths in various skill-based programs in The Gambia, with additional opportunities for training in Nigeria, Senegal, and Ghana.
Mr. Antwi commended Mayor Lowe for her unwavering dedication to the welfare of women and young people, recalling their initial meeting at a conference in Nigeria where he found her to be a source of inspiration. He praised Mayor Lowe’s accomplishments, particularly in securing the presidency of Refeel as a testament to her character and commitment to the betterment of society.
Urging support for Mayor Lowe’s development initiatives, Mr. Antwi emphasized the transformative impact of the youth voluntarism scheme on Gambian youth. He pledged to collaborate with the BCC in providing capacity-building training and supporting the mayor in achieving the objectives of the scheme.
