Alieu Sowe, the former national coordinator and 2021 flagbearer of the Gambia Action Party (GAP), has tendered his resignation. The ex-army major was chosen as GAP’s flagbearer for the 2021 presidential election, but his candidacy was ultimately rejected by the Independent Electoral Commission. In a letter shared with The Standard, Mr. Sowe cited personal and family reasons for his decision to resign from the party with immediate effect.
“I am honored and privileged to have served as a member and national coordinator of the Gambia Action Party for at least two years,” Mr. Sowe wrote. He expressed gratitude to all GAP members for their confidence in him to lead the party in the 2021 presidential election. Additionally, he acknowledged the executive members of the party for their leadership during the pre-nomination period of 2021, highlighting their adherence to the party’s constitution.
As he transitions back to private life, Mr. Sowe offered his well wishes for the Gambia Action Party’s future endeavors. “I pray and wish the party to excel in its pursuit to make The Gambia an epitome of credible leadership, good governance, and upholder of the rule of law,” he concluded.
Alieu Sowe’s resignation marks a significant turning point for the Gambia Action Party, as it navigates the aftermath of the 2021 presidential election. His departure leaves a void in the party’s leadership, prompting a period of reflection and restructuring. Despite the challenges posed by his resignation, the Gambia Action Party remains committed to its goal of promoting credible leadership, good governance, and the rule of law in The Gambia.
The resignation of Alieu Sowe serves as a reminder of the fluid nature of political landscapes and the importance of adaptability in the face of change. As the Gambia Action Party moves forward, it will need to regroup, redefine its priorities, and re-establish its presence within the political sphere. The departure of a key figure like Mr. Sowe presents both challenges and opportunities for the party to redefine its identity and focus on its core values.
In the wake of Alieu Sowe’s resignation, the Gambia Action Party will undoubtedly undergo a period of transition and reevaluation. However, with strong leadership, a dedicated membership base, and a commitment to its founding principles, the party has the potential to emerge from this period of uncertainty stronger and more united than ever before. It is in times of hardship and change that true resilience is tested, and the Gambia Action Party has the opportunity to demonstrate its capacity for growth and adaptation in the face of adversity.
