During the First Ordinary Session of the Legislative Year 2024 at the National Assembly on Thursday, 14th March, the Honourable member for Central Badibu Sulayman Saho raised a concerning issue on the recent road accidents in The Gambia. He expressed his concerns about the increasing number of deaths and serious injuries on the highways, particularly on the Trans-Gambia Highway (South Bank Road).
Almost a week ago, the country witnessed two fatal accidents that claimed the lives of almost nine individuals, as well as causing serious injuries and trauma. The Honourable member emphasized that The Gambia has a higher rate of deaths due to accidents and injuries compared to many other countries, including some in the developed world.
He highlighted the impact of road accidents on individuals and families, noting that many have lost loved ones and close friends who could have contributed to the socio-economic development of society. He disagreed with the common belief that such events are predetermined or simply the time for individuals to leave this world in a tragic manner.
The Honourable member also pointed out several factors that contribute to road accidents, such as worn-out and faulty brakes, overspeeding, poor road signs, drug and alcohol abuse by drivers, and the lackadaisical attitude of some traffic police officers. He stressed the need for action, stating that the members of the Assembly are the hope of the nation and must take decisive steps to address this issue.
He called for the consideration of passing a strong resolution, revisiting existing legislation, or formulating new policies related to road safety. It is crucial for the government and lawmakers to prioritize road safety measures to prevent further loss of lives and injuries on the highways.
In conclusion, the Honourable member urged his colleagues to act swiftly and decisively to tackle the growing problem of road accidents in The Gambia. By working together and implementing effective road safety measures, they can help save lives and ensure the well-being of all citizens. It is essential for the government and the National Assembly to prioritize this issue and take concrete steps to improve road safety for all individuals in the country.
Overall, the message delivered by the Honourable member for Central Badibu Sulayman Saho underscores the urgent need for action to address the alarming rate of road accidents in The Gambia and ensure the safety and security of all road users.
