The government of Cuba and Gambia have reaffirmed their commitment to the Cooperation Agreement in the field of health with a renewal ceremony in the capital city of Banjul. The agreement, which has been in place for almost three decades, was signed by the Gambian Minister of Health, Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, and the Cuban ambassador, Rubén G. Abelenda. This agreement ensures that doctors and healthcare personnel from Cuba continue to provide much-needed healthcare services to the people of Gambia.

During the signing ceremony, both parties expressed their satisfaction with the updated agreement, highlighting the positive relations between their governments and peoples. They emphasized the strong bond between the two countries, rooted in their shared history, culture, and mutual solidarity. The collaboration between Cuba and Gambia began in 1996 with the arrival of 38 healthcare workers as part of a Technical Assistance program. Since then, the Comprehensive Health Program, implemented in 1999, has expanded to include over 150 Cuban cooperators stationed throughout Gambia.

Currently, there are more than 100 Cuban medical specialists, graduates, and technicians working to provide healthcare services across Gambia. In addition to healthcare professionals, Cuba also played a vital role in the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Banjul in 1999. This institution, created at the behest of Cuba’s revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, continues to operate with the support of Cuban professors, contributing to the development of healthcare education in Gambia.

The signing ceremony was attended by officials from the Ministry of Health of Gambia and representatives from the Cuban Medical Brigade, underscoring the strong partnership between the two nations in the field of healthcare. The cooperation between Cuba and Gambia not only enhances the quality of healthcare services in Gambia but also serves as a testament to the enduring friendship between the two countries.

Overall, the renewal of the Cooperation Agreement in the field of health between Cuba and Gambia reaffirms the commitment of both nations to work together for the betterment of their people. Through shared expertise, resources, and a spirit of solidarity, Cuba and Gambia continue to strengthen their partnership and make significant contributions to the healthcare sector in West Africa.
