The Arts Department of the School of Education at Gambia College in Brikama hosted its first Arts Exhibition on Thursday, 9th February 2024. The event was overseen by Ms. Ramatoulie Sayang, an Arts Lecturer within the department. The exhibition, which took place at the Brikama Campus, attracted a large crowd, including students, dignitaries from Banjul City, Kanifing Municipality, and the West Coast Region.

Notable attendees included the Chairman of the Gambia College Governing Council, the Principal and Vice Principal of the College, King of Kora Dr. Jaliba Kuyateh, Hon. Momodou Sabally, Hon. Sulayman Jammeh – National Assembly Member for Bundungkakunda, Mr. Sanna B Jarju from NCAC, Ms. Sainabou Mbaye from SAACS, and representatives from the Mayor of Banjul City and Kanifing Municipality, as well as guests from Spain.

The theme of the daylong Arts Exhibition was “Changing The Narratives of Arts.” It was the first in a series of events aimed at showcasing the skills and talents of students from the Arts Department. The exhibition provided a platform for students to express themselves creatively and develop their skills, as well as promoting skill development among youth.

During the event, Hon. Momodou Sabally, Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor Ahmed Talib Bensouda, and Hon. Sulayman Jammeh, among others, were presented with art pieces created by the students. In her opening remarks, Ms. Ramatoulie Sanyang expressed her excitement at organizing the maiden edition of the Arts Exhibition, highlighting the students’ creativity and unique perspectives.

The artworks displayed at the exhibition were solely created by the students, showcasing a diverse range of skills and creativity. Reflecting on various themes such as nature appreciation, beautification, communication, and interpretation, the students exhibited works including wall hangers, paintings, candlework designs, photography, wax and textile design, and other craftworks.

Mr. Sanna B Jarju, a Guest Speaker from the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC), focused his speech on contemporary art and Intangible Cultural Heritages (ICH). He discussed the benefits of engaging in art and highlighted the support provided by NCAC to artists in the country. The event also featured speeches from the college principal, head of the Arts Department, Dr. Jaliba Kuyateh, as well as drama series, poems, and cultural performances.

Overall, the Arts Exhibition was a successful showcase of the talents and creativity of students from the Arts Department at Gambia College. It was a significant step in recognizing and celebrating the diversity of artistic skills within the college community and beyond. The event served as a platform for students to express themselves creatively and contribute to the cultural enrichment of their society.
