Eid ul-Fitr is a time for celebration and reflection for Muslims around the world, including in The Gambia. It is a moment to express gratitude for completing the spiritual duty of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. As we come together to feast and celebrate, it is important to remember those who are less fortunate and in need of our support.
During Ramadan, we are reminded of our duty to help the less privileged and to show compassion towards those who are suffering. As we prepare to celebrate Eid ul-Fitr, we must not forget those who are affected by conflicts and wars around the world. Innocent lives are lost, families are displaced, and communities are torn apart by violence and intolerance.
The recent conflict between Israel and Palestine serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by many communities. It is heart-wrenching to know that while we were breaking our fast during Ramadan, others were unable to do so peacefully. As we celebrate Eid, we must keep those who are suffering in our thoughts and prayers.
In the Ecowas sub-region, economic challenges and political tensions continue to pose obstacles to peace and stability. Personal gain and political advantage often overshadow the need to build strong communities and nations. Despite these challenges, democracy continues to thrive in The Gambia and other countries in the region.
I would like to congratulate the new president, government, and people of Senegal on their peaceful presidential election and transfer of power. This demonstrates the importance of dialogue and consensus-building in maintaining peace and stability. Moving forward, my government will study the recommendations from the recent national dialogue to incorporate them into our national development program.
As we celebrate Eid ul-Fitr, I extend my warmest wishes to the Muslim community and thank everyone for their contributions to peace, stability, and progress in our country. I also commend the Christian community for their observance of Lent and Easter. Despite the challenges we face, we must continue to work together to build a better future for all Gambians.
I am pleased to note that our government has maintained adequate stocks of basic food commodities during both fasting periods. In addition, efforts have been made to support our farmers and ensure timely payment for their produce. Development requires the collective efforts of all citizens, and by working together, we can overcome challenges and build a prosperous nation.
Taxes play a vital role in funding our development programs, and I urge all taxpayers to fulfill their obligations promptly and dutifully. By contributing to our revenue base, we can invest in infrastructure, clean water sources, and other essential services that benefit all Gambians. I assure you that your tax contributions will be used wisely to improve the quality of life for all citizens.
Looking ahead, The Gambia will host the 15th edition of the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation Summit in May 2024. This is a significant opportunity to showcase our country on the global stage and demonstrate our commitment to hosting a successful and peaceful event. Let us join together in prayer for the success of the Summit and for continued peace and prosperity in The Gambia.
As we celebrate Eid ul-Fitr, let us remember the values of caring, sharing, and empathy that Ramadan and fasting teach us. I wish you all a happy and joyous Eid ul-Fitr and hope that we will have many more opportunities to celebrate together in the future. Let us work together to build a brighter future for The Gambia and its people.
