The Ecowas country representative, Ambassador Miatta Lily French, emphasized the importance of neutrality and peacekeeping efforts by the West African troops in The Gambia, particularly the Ecomig-Ghanaian contingent under Gamcoy 7. During Ghana’s independence and Ecowas peace medal wearing celebrations in Barra, Ambassador French urged the troops to uphold Ecowas’ mission of peace and stability in the region.

She commended the troops for their dedication and hard work in maintaining peace in The Gambia. Ambassador French highlighted the crucial role of the Ghanaian troops in the Ecomig operation, covering sensitive areas and providing essential security at the Barra ferry terminal. She encouraged the troops to continue their civil-military activities, engage with local communities, and support them through donations and medical outreach to enhance Ecomig’s image and acceptance.

Colonel Cheikh Omar Tamba, the commander of Ecomig, praised the Ghanaian troops for their tireless devotion to duty and their motto of ‘we are dependable and never give up.’ He lauded their contribution to ensuring security at the Barra-Banjul ferry terminals and providing escorts for dignitaries and mission-related movements in the North Bank Region. Despite challenges such as adapting to the local weather, the troops conduct regular patrols and maintain a strong civil-military partnership.

The Ghanaian Ambassador to Senegal, Emma Mensah, recognized Ghana’s longstanding commitment to peacekeeping missions worldwide and commended the troops for their hard work and dedication to duty. A delegation from the Ghanaian army, led by General KK Kwame, attended the medal parade and independence celebrations in The Gambia to show support for the troops.

Overall, Ambassador French’s message emphasized the importance of Ecomig troops remaining neutral, supporting the Gambian defense and security forces, and engaging with local communities to fulfill their peacekeeping mandate. The Ghanaian contingent’s efforts in maintaining peace and security in The Gambia were praised, highlighting their vital role in the Ecomig mission. Through continued dedication and hard work, the troops aim to leave a lasting legacy of peace in the region and enhance Ecomig’s reputation among the local population.
