ECOWAS recently held an engagement with the Gambia Press Union (GPU) and Women Journalist Association of The Gambia (WoJAG) at the ECOWAS permanent mission headquarters in Fajara. This event took place as part of the activities commemorating International Women’s Month, with the aim of enhancing democracy and good governance in The Gambia.

The discussion was led by Her Excellency Miatta L. French, Resident Representative-ECOWAS, who emphasized the importance of engaging with media practitioners, especially female journalists, to deepen democracy in West African countries. She highlighted the crucial role of the media in providing accurate and credible information to the public, ensuring that it does not lead to unnecessary problems. The brainstorming session aimed to reinforce the significance of the media in democracy and to implement efficient strategies.

Miatta L. French also mentioned that ECOWAS’s involvement goes beyond ECOMIG, with various projects designed to enhance democracy and governance in partner countries. She assured continuous support for building the capacity of media practitioners to further strengthen democratic processes.

Ms. Annette Anta Camara, President of WoJAG, welcomed the initiative and emphasized the impact it would have on supporting women journalists. This initiative would contribute to increasing the role of WoJAG in socio-economic activities by collaborating with the media to promote the rights and welfare of women in the industry. Annette highlighted the importance of supporting freedom of expression, the rule of law, and increasing media awareness through this engagement.

Furthermore, Annette stressed that the engagement would enhance the professional skills of women journalists, increase the values of democracy, and improve the professional competencies of the Women Journalists’ Association of The Gambia. The focus was also on ensuring that women’s welfare needs are prioritized within the media industry.

Overall, the event aimed to strengthen democracy and good governance in The Gambia by empowering media practitioners, particularly female journalists. The discussions and initiatives highlighted the vital role of the media in informing the public and contributing to a more transparent and accountable government. With continuous support from ECOWAS and organizations like WoJAG, the capacity and professionalism of women journalists in The Gambia are set to improve, ultimately benefiting the democratic processes in the country.
