Boto Bojang, councilor for Sanyang ward, has recently taken a significant step towards addressing water scarcity in Banyaka village by inaugurating a borehole. This essential initiative was made possible with the support of Gammol, a philanthropic organization based in the Gambia, as revealed in an exclusive interview with Bojang.

Following his election into office, Bojang and his team conducted a thorough assessment of areas within the ward that were in dire need of essential resources. During this process, it was discovered that the Banyaka community was heavily reliant on wells for their water supply, highlighting a pressing issue that needed immediate attention.

Taking proactive steps to engage stakeholders within the ward, Bojang shared the findings of their assessment and rallied support for addressing the water shortage in Banyaka. He personally reached out to Gammol, emphasizing the community’s reliance on well water for drinking and cooking, and the urgent need for clean and safe drinking water. Following a survey of the area, Gammol approved Bojang’s application and proceeded to dig two boreholes to provide clean drinking water through 30 taps across the community of Banyaka.

The significant cost of installing these boreholes, amounting to D2,000,000.00, underscored the need for collaborative efforts in addressing water scarcity in the larger Sanyang ward, which comprises seventeen villages including Farato, Jambur, Tanji, and Jambanjelly. Bojang emphasized the necessity of philanthropic organizations stepping in to support similar projects across the ward, where access to NAWEC water supply is limited in some areas.

Ensuring the sustainability of the borehole project, Bojang’s ward committee engaged the Banyaka Village Development Committee in implementing a system where beneficiaries would contribute a reasonable amount towards a fund dedicated to repairs and maintenance. Both the Alkalo and VDC of Banyaka have expressed their commitment to upholding the project’s longevity and functionality.

The Alkalo of Banyaka, Sanna Camara, and the Chairperson of the Banyaka Village Development Committee, Lamin Camara, conveyed their gratitude for the support received from Gammol and Bojang. Their appreciation extended to the philanthropic organization and the ward councilor for their instrumental role in providing clean and safe drinking water to the community.

In conclusion, Bojang’s dedication to addressing water scarcity in Banyaka exemplifies the power of collaboration between local councils, philanthropic organizations, and community members. This borehole project not only provides a sustainable solution to the community’s water needs but also sets a precedent for future initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life in the Sanyang ward and beyond.
