The Mayor of Kanifing Municipality, Talib Bensouda, recently visited the Gambia College Arts department to inspire students to persevere through the challenges of skills training in order to reap the rewards of a promising career. As the mayor of the country’s most densely populated local government area, he pledged a generous donation of D50,000 to support the department’s endeavors.
During an art exhibition at the college, Mayor Bensouda expressed his admiration for the creativity and energy displayed by the students. He shared how he personally received and appreciated the artworks gifted to him by the college students, highlighting the impact of artistic expression in evoking emotions and connecting individuals to their heritage and culture.
Mayor Bensouda encouraged the art students to remain dedicated to their craft, emphasizing the potential for success in the arts industry. He mentioned a Gambian artist who was able to sell an artwork for US$100,000 in Ghana, underscoring the economic opportunities that can arise from pursuing a career in the arts.
Furthermore, Mayor Bensouda emphasized his commitment to preserving Gambia’s cultural heritage by overseeing the construction of a 500-seater theatre at the municipal library, set to be inaugurated in July. This initiative reflects his passion for promoting and safeguarding the country’s rich history and traditions.
The Vice Principal of the Gambia College, Madam Isatou Ndow, welcomed Mayor Bensouda’s visit and expressed the institution’s desire to continue seeking support, both moral and financial, to further enhance the educational experience for students.
Mr. Malang Jarju, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Arts Department at the Gambia College, encouraged students to join the Art Department to develop their skills in various artistic disciplines such as sculpture, architecture, and music. He stressed the importance of nurturing these talents as they can lead to job creation and economic empowerment for individuals in the art industry.
