Senegal’s president-elect Bassirou Diomaye Faye is poised to become Africa’s youngest elected president at just 44 years old. His radical campaign has energized the youth and instilled hope in those who support left-wing pan-Africanism. However, there are doubts about whether Faye will be able to deliver on the radical changes and politics he promised once he assumes office on April 2.

Faye’s journey to the presidency was not without obstacles. Alongside his mentor Ousmane Sonko, Faye was released from prison just days before the March 24 elections. Despite being relatively unknown outside of Senegal before his release, Faye quickly gained momentum on the campaign trail, standing firm on promises to shake up the political landscape.

Having joined the Patriotes Africains du Sénégal pour le Travail, l’éthique et la Fraternité (Pastef) political movement, Faye’s anti-establishment message and left-wing pan-African ideals resonated with voters, especially the youth who felt marginalized by the current system. His campaign included radical proposals such as leaving the CFA currency arrangement and renegotiating terms with foreign energy companies.

However, there are concerns about Faye’s ability to follow through on these promises. With Senegal’s economy booming thanks to oil and gas discoveries, there are fears that Faye’s push for economic nationalism could harm the country’s international standing and potentially disrupt key industries. Experts like Mark Bohlund caution that Faye may need to compromise on some of his promises to avoid negative consequences.

While Faye’s victory has been celebrated as a win for African youth looking for generational change in leadership, there are challenges ahead. Faye will need to navigate complex issues around foreign investment, resource management, and meeting the expectations of his young supporters for better opportunities and quality of life.

As Faye prepares to take office, there is hope that his leadership will inspire other young leaders across the continent. With a growing population of young people eager for change, Faye’s presidency could signal a shift towards more youthful and dynamic leadership in Africa.

Overall, Faye’s journey to the presidency is a testament to the power of grassroots activism and the desire for change among the youth. While there are challenges ahead, Faye’s victory represents a step towards a more inclusive and progressive political landscape in Senegal and beyond.
