The Brikama Area Council has issued a warning to the general public, especially vendors looking to secure space at the outskirts of the Brikama Central Market, urging them to demand a receipt on the spot if any payment is requested for space occupancy and to avoid dealing with unauthorized agents.

Reports emerged of unauthorized individuals collecting money from those interested in setting up stalls outside the market for the upcoming ‘Koriteh’ sales. In response, the Brikama Area Council formed a team to investigate these allegations of corruption within the market.

In an official statement released by the BAC, it was revealed that efforts were being made to uncover the truth behind the alleged corrupt practices. The council, through its market and car park sub-committee, had set up a team tasked with allocating space to the public for ‘Wanteer’ during the Eid Sale, charging D500 per space at the peripheral Brikama Central Market.

During the space allocation process on a Friday afternoon, the team encountered a group of women near the Church close to the Brikama Police Station. These women claimed that a police officer had already taken D500 from each of them without providing a receipt for the space they occupied. This led to some resistance to the council’s charge, but the issue was swiftly resolved, and the women complied with the payment. The matter was then taken to the Brikama Police Station for further investigation, where the allegations were denied by the command.

In light of these events, the Brikama Area Council advised the public to always demand a receipt for any payments made on the spot, specifically the D500 fee for space allocation, and to avoid making payments to any unauthorized agents.

It is crucial for vendors and the general public to be vigilant and cautious when dealing with any requests for payments, especially in situations where there may be a risk of corruption or unauthorized individuals taking advantage of the situation. By being proactive and insisting on receipts for any transactions, individuals can protect themselves from potential fraudulent activities and ensure transparency in the process of space allocation at the Brikama Central Market.

In conclusion, the Brikama Area Council is committed to upholding integrity and fairness in market operations and urges all stakeholders to cooperate in maintaining a transparent and accountable system for space allocation. It is essential for the community to work together to prevent corruption and uphold ethical standards in all market activities.
