The Association of Gambian Manufacturers held its annual general meeting on Saturday, 2nd March 2024 at Senegambia Hotel in Kololi. The meeting brought together numerous manufacturers and representatives who elected new executive members for the association and discussed important issues concerning the association.
Abdoullahi Jammeh, Deputy Permanent Secretary at MOTIE, delivered a keynote address on behalf of Honourable Bubacarr Ousmaila Joof, Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment (MOTIE) at the AGM. In his address, he lauded the leadership and members of the association and emphasized the crucial role of manufacturers in the economic development and prosperity of the nation.
Jammeh highlighted the long-standing and beneficial relationship between the Ministry and the Association, working collaboratively for over a decade to promote industrial growth and economic development in The Gambia. He urged the members to align their actions with the national development plan, emphasizing the private sector’s significance in driving sustainable development across all sectors of the economy.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary acknowledged the challenges faced by the manufacturing sector, including high taxes, increased cost of doing business, and importing raw materials. He stressed the need for collaborative efforts to address these challenges and revitalize the sector for economic growth, job creation, and industrial transformation.
Jammeh emphasized the manufacturing sector’s potential to contribute to economic growth through technology adoption, innovative solutions, and value addition to raw materials. However, he also highlighted the constraints hindering the sector’s growth, such as high electricity charges, limited access to industrial land, and inadequate infrastructure.
The government, he mentioned, is committed to addressing these challenges in collaboration with stakeholders, including the Association of Gambian Manufacturers. At the AGM, Mr. Farimang Saho was elected as the new Chairman of the association, with Muhammed Sillah as the vice chairman and Mr. Hydara as treasurer. Additionally, six executive members were elected to serve the association.
Overall, the AGM provided a platform for manufacturers to discuss crucial issues, elect new leadership, and strategize on overcoming challenges faced by the manufacturing sector in The Gambia. With a collective effort from government and industry stakeholders, there is optimism for revitalizing the manufacturing sector and enhancing its contribution to the nation’s economic development and prosperity.
