The Association of Gambian Manufacturers (AGM) recently held its first Annual General Meeting since 2017 on March 2, 2024, at the Senegambia Beach Hotel in Kairaba. The meeting was a significant gathering that brought together members of the association, government stakeholders, industry leaders, and other key figures to discuss important issues and elect a new Executive Committee to lead the organization.

Since its inception in 2005, the AGM has been a vital support and advocacy group for the local manufacturing sector in The Gambia. It has worked tirelessly to promote the interests of Gambian manufacturers, foster growth, and advocate for a favorable business environment for the industry. The Chairman of the AGM, Mr. Mohammed Silla, highlighted the historic establishment of the association and recognized the Founding Fathers who were leading industrialists in the country.

During the Annual General Meeting, which was funded by the European Union (EU), members and government stakeholders reviewed the progress of the association, discussed challenges and opportunities facing the manufacturing sector in The Gambia, and set a course for future growth and development. Hon. Sir Farimang Saho, who was elected as the President of the Association, highlighted the AGM’s role in influencing key policies, such as revising electricity costs through executive orders and securing an office within the Ministry of Trade for direct engagement in policy discussions.

The government, represented by DPS Abdoulie Jammeh, expressed its commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the manufacturing sector and improving policies, regulations, and the investment climate to support the growth and sustainability of the industry. The private sector, including the manufacturing sector, was recognized as a fundamental element of sustainable development in The Gambia, driving economic growth, job creation, and industrial transformation.

The highlight of the Annual General Meeting was the election of a new Executive Committee, comprising nine dedicated business persons from the manufacturing industry, to steer the association’s strategic direction and advocacy efforts. The newly elected Committee members include Hon. Sir Farimang Saho as President, Mr. Mohammed Silla as Vice President, and others committed to advancing the interests of the association’s members and promoting the growth and sustainability of the sector.

The AGM expressed gratitude to the European Union for its support in organizing the event and emphasized the importance of collaboration between international partners and local stakeholders in driving positive change in The Gambia’s manufacturing sector. The newly elected Executive Committee is committed to working collaboratively with AGM members, government agencies, and industry partners to address challenges, seize opportunities, and create a conducive business environment for manufacturers in The Gambia.

Overall, the AGM’s Annual General Meeting was a significant milestone in the association’s efforts to support and promote the growth of the manufacturing sector in The Gambia. With the newly elected Executive Committee in place, the future looks promising for Gambian manufacturers as they work towards a more prosperous and sustainable industry.
