The Association of Gambian Manufacturers (AGM) recently had a meeting with the Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MoTIE), Mr. Baboucarr Ousmaila Joof, to discuss ways to collaborate effectively in order to achieve the association’s objectives. The delegation from AGM was led by its President, Hon. Sir Farimang Saho.

Founded in 2005 by two prominent Gambian business leaders, Alh. Sankung Sillah (soap and plastic industry) and Mr. Mukthara (construction materials, river transport and infrastructure), AGM has played a crucial role in supporting and advocating for the local manufacturing sector. Since its establishment, AGM has worked tirelessly to promote the interests of Gambian manufacturers, encourage growth, and push for a conducive business environment.

During the meeting with Minister Joof, AGM discussed various issues affecting the manufacturing sector in The Gambia. They highlighted the challenges faced by local manufacturers, including access to finance, infrastructure limitations, and competition from imported goods. The association emphasized the need for government support in addressing these challenges and creating a level playing field for Gambian manufacturers.

One of the key topics of discussion was the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector in driving economic growth and development in The Gambia. AGM stressed the need for policies that support local manufacturing, such as incentives for local producers, investment in infrastructure, and promoting Made in The Gambia products both domestically and internationally.

AGM also raised concerns about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the manufacturing sector and urged the government to provide support to help businesses recover from the economic downturn caused by the pandemic. They emphasized the importance of ensuring a resilient and sustainable manufacturing sector that can contribute to the country’s economic development.

Minister Joof commended the efforts of AGM in advocating for the interests of Gambian manufacturers and assured them of the government’s commitment to supporting the growth of the manufacturing sector. He acknowledged the challenges faced by local manufacturers and pledged to work closely with AGM to address these challenges and create a conducive environment for the sector to thrive.

In conclusion, the meeting between AGM and Minister Joof was a productive dialogue that underscored the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector in driving economic growth and development in The Gambia. AGM reiterated its commitment to promoting the interests of Gambian manufacturers and working towards a thriving and sustainable manufacturing sector in the country.

Overall, the discussions between AGM and Minister Joof highlighted the potential for cooperation and partnership in achieving common goals for the benefit of the manufacturing sector and the economy as a whole.
