For over 30 years, the Upper East Regional airport has faced numerous challenges, mainly influenced by political motives from the NDC and NPP parties. Despite promises made by President Akufo-Addo and his party during the 2016 campaign to complete the project, the airport still remains unfinished.

At the durbar of Chiefs, the Paramount Chief of the Sakoti Traditional Area, Naba Sigri Bewong, reminded President Nana Akuffo Addo of his promise to build the airport as per his visit to the Sumbrungu Chiefs Palace and the One-Village-One-Dam project launch in Bongo. The Chiefs expressed disappointment in the government’s lack of commitment and urged the President to honor his promise.

The lack of a functional airport in the Upper East Region has led to frustration and despair among the people. The Chiefs highlighted the need for an airport to attract investment and drive development in the region. They called for a revisit of technical assessments and the development of partnerships with private investors.

The Upper East Regional Minister expressed his determination to see the construction of an airport in the region and emphasized the importance of unity and support in achieving this goal. The Chiefs also commended the efforts of the Regional Minister and called on all individuals to support the cause.

Gabriel Agambila, Chairman of the Airport Development Committee, expressed disappointment with politicians who have used the promise of an airport in the Upper East Region for political gain during elections. This has resulted in missed opportunities for development and employment in the region.

It was also noted that the government had identified and acquired land for the airport’s development in the late 1970s and early 1980s. However, the project is still incomplete, despite the relocation and economic sacrifices made by the community.

Madam Caroline Kurugu, Secretary to the committee, the Bongo chief, regional chief Imam, and other dignitaries from the region were also present at the event in support of the airport’s development.

Overall, the plea for the completion of the airport project in the Upper East Region emphasizes the urgent need for infrastructure and economic growth in the region. The development of an airport would not only benefit the local community but also attract investors and drive progress in the region.
