The U.S. ambassador to Gabon, Vernelle Trim Fitzpatrick, visited the office of the President of the Transition, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguéma on Tuesday to reaffirm the support of the U.S. administration in the success of the ongoing transition in Gabon.
“The support proposed within the framework of the Transition demonstrates the friendship between our nations and our common desire to strengthen bilateral cooperation,” wrote the Gabonese Transition president on his X account.
“Our discussions focused on strengthening relations between Gabon and the United States, with an emphasis on the economy, diplomacy, and trade,” he added.
Sanctions
“At the end of the meeting, His Excellency Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema expressed to his guest the country’s willingness to elevate bilateral cooperation between Gabon and the United States to a higher level, within the framework of mutually beneficial advantages,” according to a statement from the Gabonese presidency issued at the end of the meeting.
During a recent press conference at the U.S. diplomatic representation in Libreville, Vernelle Trim Fitzpatrick explained that the sanctions imposed on Gabon following the coup d’état on August 30th fall under U.S. law, which systematically sanctions any seizure of power by means other than elections.
Despite these sanctions, Washington has not severed cooperation with Gabon, which remains excluded from AGOA, the African Growth and Opportunity Act.
