The Transition President left Libreville on Wednesday, February 28th for the capital of Kenya where he will participate in the 6th edition of the United Nations Assembly for the Environment (ANUE). He is one of the seven heads of state expected at this biennial meeting.

The United Nations Assembly for the Environment (ANUE) opened in Nairobi on February 26th. Like many of his counterparts, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema traveled to the Kenyan capital on Wednesday where a record number of 6,000 delegates, including seven heads of state, 139 ministers and vice-ministers, as well as experts, activists, and industry representatives will be gathered until March 1st.

Described as “a sort of global parliament for the environment”, ANUE was created in 2012 following the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in Brazil. It is a place where world leaders come together to discuss the environmental challenges facing the planet. The goal is to “define environmental policy priorities and develop international legislation in this field”.

“The central theme of the United Nations Assembly for the Environment (ANUE-6) will be multilateral agreements on the environment and how they can help overcome the triple planetary crisis of climate chaos, biodiversity loss, and pollution,” according to the UN newsletter. Six priority themes dominating the agenda of ANUE-6 are addressed, including water scarcity, responsible mining, mineral management (especially phosphorus), climate-modifying technologies, financing environmental actions, and implementing the Kunming-Montreal framework. The Transition President is expected to speak during this meeting, with Gabon leading environmental issues in the Africa region.
