On Wednesday, March 20, the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Gabon was received in audience by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Transition. With Alexandre Barro Chambrier, Cécile Abadie discussed the EU’s support for the ongoing transition process in Gabon. The EU says it is attentive to the country’s needs.
Accompanied by a delegation of experts from the “Dialogue and Mediation and Peace” sector within the Peace, Partnerships, and Crisis Management Directorate of the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU Ambassador to Gabon was received on Wednesday, March 20, in audience by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Transition, Alexandre Barro Chambrier. Cécile Abadie said she was on a mission to assess the challenges and opportunities of the Transition as well as any needs for support. “We have already met many interlocutors who are institutional or actors of civil society and political parties,” said the European diplomat.
“What helps us to make a better assessment of what is happening at the moment,” commented Cécile Abadie, who said she discussed with Alexandre Barro Chambrier, issues related to electoral preparation, constitutional reform, and transitional justice issues. “Many topics were raised. Now we need to do a reflection and consolidation work,” she said. “What stands out the most is that it is a process. Many needs will emerge over time. We mainly want to remain attentive to these needs,” she added.
The EU’s support, she explained, could be provided in the form of expertise support, awareness-raising, training for actors who can contribute to democratic change, capacity-building for civil society actors and media. “There are many possible support modalities. But we are still in an exploratory phase so these options will be refined over time,” she said.
