“… Faced with the opacity observed in the preparations for the inclusive national dialogue, we elders and dignitaries suggest, for better organization, the postponement of the said dialogue which would involve all stakeholders, through the establishment of an inclusive national preparatory committee (…) let us give ourselves time to do things properly. It is better to have well-prepared dialogues to succeed rather than an improvised and rushed dialogue that would plunge the country into the abyss.”
These words are from Eugène Révangué who, on behalf of his colleagues from the Collective of Elders and Dignitaries of Gabon, put forward a number of conditions for their participation in the upcoming inclusive national dialogue that the transitional authorities have planned to open on April 2.
The elders who advocate for the postponement believe that this national dialogue should be sovereign, punctuated by acts of a binding, enforceable and opposable nature to all. The members of the dialogue bureau, they argue, should be appointed by a president who would himself be chosen by the delegates to these dialogues.
The “Elders” also reject the participation of the ruling party and its affiliates in the future dialogue for having led the country to disaster, they affirm.
The fact that the former holders of power enjoy all their freedom and “capacity for harm” seriously worries the elders and dignitaries of Gabon. “One cannot claim to put an end to the Bongo-PDG system and resume the same behaviors, keeping by your side its most criticized members who feel unpunished,” they warned while calling on the CTRI to reconsider.
