The former Prime Minister, Julien Nkoghe Bekale, during his statement on March 19 in Libreville, proposed a three and a half year transition for the upcoming national inclusive dialogue that will open next month. This transition began on August 30, 2023, in Gabon, following the military coup led by the Committee for Transition and the Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) with General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema at its helm, the new strongman of the country.
“The Transition could last forty-two months,” Mr. Nkoghe Bekale proposed, later stating, “this seems to me a reasonable and realistic duration.”
In his extensive statement, Julien Nkoghe Bekale hopes that the upcoming gathering will consensually decide to give the CTRI more time to “put our country on the right track towards prosperity.”
“It is necessary to give more time to the CTRI. Yes, time is needed to heal wounds, resolve social ties, rationalize political life and debate, organize free, credible, inclusive, and transparent elections,” he insisted.
During this media appearance, the former Prime Minister (January 2019-July 2020) under the deposed Ali Bongo Ondimba did not hesitate to acknowledge his share of responsibility in the chaotic management of the country.
For Julien Nkoghe Bekale, “yes, we have made mistakes. I confess it. Perhaps we were not courageous enough to denounce the observed excesses. Therefore, on my personal behalf, I ask forgiveness to the Gabonese people for the errors committed and for the controversial proposals that I have defended in the past.”
