Like other political parties that have not survived after the disappearance of their leaders, the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), former ruling party, will not escape from this phenomenon which has become the norm, given the crisis it is going through and its sidelining from public affairs by the Transitional Committee for the Restoration of Institutions (CTRI).
Becoming an opposition political party, the PDG is plagued by a deep leadership crisis. Ill, Ali Bongo could no longer assume his duties, he was removed from office, and a provisional board now ensures the current affairs until the organization of the congress.
It is the old “tortoise of Bikele”, Paul Biyogue Mba, also silenced during Ali Bongo’s 2nd seven-year term, who will be in charge of leading with his fellow vice presidents: Alain Claude Bilie Nze, Jeannot Kalima and Yves Fernand Manfoumbi, the PDG ship until the so-called restoration congress.
Already, since the former Head of State was deposed on August 30, 2023 by military under the command of General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, the new strongman of the country, the PDG has become a shadow of its former self. As dissent emerges with the cascading resignations of certain barons, such as Mathias Otounga Ossibadjouo, Semplice Boungoures, Franck Ondo Methogo, and others who have not yet had the courage to speak out openly.
The hemorrhage of party militants could continue during this upcoming political gathering, the expected mobilization of which will be closely scrutinized by political observers.
It is evident that with Ali Bongo’s removal from the party leadership and the expulsion of Joséphine Kama alias Patience Dabany, several militants and sympathizers of the so-called “masses” party will be absent. Their unconditional followers will no longer have an interest in attending party activities.
Who will finance the militants without convictions who are often transported to participate in events for 2000 CFA francs or 5000 CFA francs per head? The power faucets being locked.
The celebration on March 12 of the 56th anniversary of the PDG will be a real test for Omar Bongo’s party, whose breakup seems to be confirmed.
