Football fans were unable to travel to approved stadiums for the start of the first and second division football championships (D1 and D2), as announced several months ago for Saturday, March 30, 2024.
In a communication made on Monday, the Secretary General of the National Professional Football League (LINAFP) announced the indefinite postponement of the launch of said championships for “organizational reasons”, without further details.
Apologizing to partners, sponsors of LINAFP, and football fans for this “False start”, the Secretary General emphasized that “the next dates will be communicated later”.
A week ago, during a seminar to strengthen the managerial capacities of elite clubs, the Minister in charge of sports, André Jacques Augand, had assured that “all conditions and provisions had been made for the resumption of national football on September 30, 2024”.
For more than three seasons, in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the elite football championship has not been organized in Gabon.
Financial problems have often caused difficulties in organization and cyclical interruptions of the D1 and D2 championships, mainly for clubs that receive subsidies from the state, dedicated to paying salaries of players and technical staff.
Professional football associations have always raised their voices, including in recent weeks, to demand the payment of months and years of arrears in their wages.
